How Do You Correctly Measure for a Blanket or
Sheet For the Pony
|
Take a side
measurement from center of chest to center of rump
(middle of tail). Refer to the illustration. This
gives you the size needed for our pony's blanket.

How
Can you be Sure The Saddle Fits Properly?
Correct Saddle
Fitting
Proper saddle fitting begins with correct
placing of the saddle.
Step 1
Place the saddle on the horse's back
and find the point of shoulder for scapula. To
find this point, lift the horse's front leg and
watch the shoulder blade movement. It moves back
towards the saddle when you lift the leg forward,
the farthest part of the bone is the point of
shoulder. Put your hand on it and let the leg
down. You now know where the horse's point is.
Place the saddle so that the tree is 1" -
2" behind the shoulder. This is extremely
important! If the saddle is too far forward
you may get an incorrect fit, or more importantly,
a saddle placed on top of the shoulder will hamper
your horse's ability to move as freely as intended!!!
Step 2
With the saddle in correct place, without a pad
under it, check for proper clearance under pommel
and through gullet. There is no set rule for how
much clearance due to different pommel and seat
depths, but girthed up with a person in the saddle,
you should have adequate clearance at the pommel
and be able to see light all the way through gullet.
On a new saddle you should have at least 2 fingers
clearance under the pommel, more is ok as long
as step 3 applies.
Step 3
With the girth tightened and horse standing on
level ground, stand back from the saddle and focus
oh the seat where the rider sits. This is the
balance point and must be parallel to the ground.
The pommel should be lower than the cantle if
balance is correct.
Step 4
The panels (the area under saddle that sits on
horse's back) need to rest evenly. Run our hands
under the saddle from front to back and take notice
of any holes or heavy points. If it feels pretty
even all the way through, you're good to go!!
Enjoy your ride!!!
Step 5
Put your regular pad under the saddle now and
you should see additional clearance. The saddle
should still be in balance as described in 1-4.
If your saddle is balanced, we do not recommend
corrective or additional padding. If you must
use them, fit saddle as above but have rider sit
in the saddle for correct balance in Step 3.
